By: Walker, Jane, 100 Things You Should Know About Ancient Egypt, 2003 Database: History Reference Center 93 Hippo hunting was a dangerous but popular sport in ancient Egypt. Hunters in reed boots, armed only with spears and ropes, killed hippos in the waters of the Nile. In the desert, hunters chased lions, antelope, wild bulls, gazelles, and hares. Marsh birds were killed with throwing sticks that were like boomerangs. 94 The Egyptians played various board games, a few of which we still play today. The game of senet was supposed to represent the struggle between good and evil on the journey into the next world. Players moved sets of counters across the board according to how their throwing sticks (like modern dice) landed. Another popular board game was called hounds and jackals.
